Monterey County Children’s Health Outreach for Insurance, Care and Enrollment (MC-CHOICE) Program is committed to promote outreach, enrollment, retention, and utilization of the Medi-Cal program benefits for families throughout Monterey County.


The Monterey County Department of Social Services, Community Benefits Branch remains open assisting the residents of Monterey County in various ways, continues to receive applications for CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, CalFresh, and General Assistance, along with emergency related programs. During this time the MC-CHOICE unit remains in-house. Residents are urged to use the online application: BenefitsCal to apply or may also call 1-866-361-0477 to apply over the phone.

CalFresh

CalFresh was formerly named Food Stamps and is called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) in other states.

CalWORKs

The California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program is the State implementation of the Federal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program.

Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal is California’s public health care insurance program. Medi-Cal is administered through the Department of Health Care Services supported by federal and state funding.

General Assistance

GA is a county funded temporary cash assistance program for unemployed single adults and couples who may not have dependent children and are not receiving other public assistance benefits.
